Tampnet to provide high-speed, fibre based connectivity enabling remote operations for Woodside’s Trion Project in the Gulf of Mexico

Tampnet, a global leader in offshore high-capacity, low-latency connectivity services, announces the award of a fiber optic project and long-term service contract for fibre connectivity and services for the Trion Project in the Gulf of Mexico. Trion is a joint venture between Woodside Petróleo Operaciones de México, S. de R.L. de C.V. (Operator) and PEMEX Exploración y Producción (non-Operator).

This Contract award is a major milestone for Tampnet in that it represents an entry into Mexican waters, establishing Tampnet as one of the strongest players in yet another offshore region. The fibre-based connectivity to shore for Trion will enable remote operations, safety and training capabilities which will be managed from a Woodside onshore facility based locally in Mexico.

The additional subsea fibre cable of approx. 200km represents a significant addition to Tampnet’s existing fibre infrastructure in the deepwater region of the Gulf of Mexico, currently consisting of 1500km of subsea fibre.

Tampnet CEO, Elie Hanna, commented: “Offshore energy companies can now fully embrace digitalisation and automation technologies, benefitting from real-time data analytics and AI-driven insights, irrespective of the offshore field’s location. In terms of data speeds, reliability and scalability, no other technologies can compete with fibre optics, which is why offshore field developments focused on safety, minimal carbon emissions and efficiency continue to prefer and invest in fibre to shore. This project also ties in perfectly with our ambitions for geographic expansion and long-term presence in Mexico”.

The Tampnet Gulf of Mexico subsea fibre infrastructure connects approximately 20 deepwater offshore assets on redundant fibre to shore and includes a new landing station.

Tampnet’s roaming relationship with US telecom major AT&T means the additional 5G coverage will be available to offshore worker’s private devices. The additional 5G coverage also means an expansion of the coverage of the US public safety network, FirstNet, making Trion a significant contributor towards increased safety in the region. Trion FPU-web
