(Stavanger/Amsterdam October 13th) Tampnet and KPN are excited to announce that Tampnet’s network on the Dutch continental shelf will be live from October 12th. A total of 10 new masts with 25 antennas will provide 4G LTE, GSM, NB-IoT and CATM1 services to the oil and gas, offshore wind and maritime industries. The coverage in Dutch waters has been increased by more than 5,000 km2 and now reaches up to 300 km off the Dutch coastline.
In cooperation with KPN, the largest telecoms operator in the Netherlands, Tampnet has now safely and successfully installed 10 new masts with 25 antennas in the Dutch part of the North Sea adding flexibility and redundancy to the oil and gas operators, oilservice companies as well as the offshore wind farms, maritime industry, fishermen, cruiseship passengers and recreational boaters using this area. The 4G LTE “cloud” in the Dutch sector has been merged into Tampnet’s overall North Sea coverage, and provides a seamless and standardised offshore 4G LTE service between Norway, Denmark, the UK and now also the Netherlands.
Efficiency and more sustainable offshore industries
KPN and Tampnet focus strongly on industrial users who need robust, high capacity and fast mobile connections at sea. It is estimated that approx. 5,000 people earn their living on offshore platforms and from fishing in this area and this number wil increase due to upcoming construction, operation and maintenance of offshore wind farms. In addition the Navy is also very active in this area.
Jacob Groote, Director 5G at KPN points out, that many mission critical activities are carried out in the North Sea area which require first class connectivity and stable connections which improve both operations efficiency, carbon footprint and safety.
During inspections and repairs of offshore installations, it is very efficient if experts can monitor work remotely from a control room onshore or on a ship. In an onshore control room it is often faster and easier to make advanced decisions and this may reduce the need to send entire teams offshore, which again reduces the carbon footprint. Moreover, people who previously had to work completely autonomously offshore can now easily receive assistance from colleagues onshore.

The higher bandwidth of 4G offers many more possibilities compared to ordinary VSAT/satellite communication.
An example is video conferencing where smartphones, tablets and laptops now can be used, which means that all IT applications we use in onshore offices now also can be used offshore making the entire IT workflow much more effectent ”, Groote points out.
IoT and sensors
The network is also built to support narrowband technologies (NB-IoT & CATM1) to support the industrial digitalization efforts with sensors, so that data about corrosion, flow pressure, temperature and air quality for instance can easily be collected, connected to the cloud and transferred very quickly anywhere offshore or onshore enabling remote monitoring and predictive maintenance.
