December 28, 2018

At Tampnet Norway’s Christmas event on December 19th in Stavanger it was all about IoT offshore. More than 40 guests came to experience how companies like Amazon Web Services, Telia, COM4, JB Systems and Envio are developing solutions for IoT offshore. IMG_0314_Cropped

Per Atle Sørensen from Tampnet gave an update on Tampnet’s 3 000 km long fiber optic network and the implementation of the TOUGHNET on the Dutch continental shelf – adding 110 platforms to the Tampnet network (now 350 platforms). He also showed the expansion of the 4G LTE coverage West of Shetland, at the Hornsea Windfarm and in the Gulf of Mexico. Sørensen informed that the 4G coverage in the North Sea will be complemented with GSM, enabling all mobile users to also use it for making standard phone calls. Cato Lammenes from Tampnet International Carrier gave an update on the unique carrier network for data transfer in the Nordics and Europe now with new PoPs in Stockholm, Frankfurt, Houston and Dallas.

Live streaming and digital twin
Sven Lunde and Massimiliano Angelino from Amazon Web Services ran a demo from Luxembourg with live streaming of data from a pump system and its digital twin, all controlled from the conference room in Stavanger.

First platform using NB-IoT
Jørn Hauge from Telia presented a new NB-IoT concept by Telia, CGI and Tampnet and broke the news about Wintershall’s Brage Platform in the North Sea being the first offshore installation to make use of the NB-IoT technology. This was also announced on the following day in a press release by Telia.

Tracing of containers
Stian Eldre from COM4 and Jan Narve Bakken from JB Systems talked about their exciting NB-IoT project enabling the tracing of containers used for offshore operations. Several service companies are interested in this solution due to fact that their device meets all standards for use in Ex-zones in both Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea. James Wilkinson from Envio wrapped up the show by demonstrating the Envio unit that Tampnet among others have installed on their sitemaster gauges enabling them to find their way back home from the offshore installation.IMG_0289_Cropped-1000x730

Managing Director North Sea at Tampnet, Per Atle Sørensen was thrilled about the event: “I would like to thank all participants for making this a great event with valuable professional content about IoT offshore and excellent networking. We are already looking forward to next year’s event.”
