Tampnet launches real-time fibre sensing for cable protection

Tampnet is strengthening the protection of its offshore infrastructure by rapidly rolling out their innovative real-time fibre sensing technology across its subsea cable network, reinforcing its role as a critical infrastructure provider in offshore energy and maritime operations.

Tampnet, the global leader in offshore connectivity, has rapidly deployed advanced fibre sensing technology across its subsea cable network to safeguard critical infrastructure. With most of its network already covered by innovative sensing solutions, Tampnet has taken physical security to the next level.

This initiative introduces a physical layer of security that complements traditional network protection measures. By leveraging Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), Tampnet's proprietary State of Polarization (SoP) technology, and AI-powered maritime intelligence, the company can detect and classify events along its cable routes in real time. These systems have enabled Tampnet to monitor activities such as trawl impacts and other more advanced physical threats, ensuring rapid response and enhanced resilience.

Tampnet also offers fibre sensing as a service to 3rd party infrastructure by instrumenting telecom fibre-cable networks with fibre sensing technology, enabling real-time monitoring of subsea and terrestrial cables for physical threats such as trawling, dredging, or excavator activity. The service continuously analyses strain or acoustic signals along the entire cable length, detecting disturbance or vibrations. When abnormalities occur, Tampnet can alert customers or trigger mitigation to protect the cables' integrity and prevent damage.

Monitor and protect
  • DAS: Uses existing fibre optic cables to detect vibrations and acoustic signals, turning the cable into a continuous sensor
  • SoP: Tampnet's own technology warns of any movements, displacements or physical impacts to cables

"We now have the tools to distinguish real threats from false alarms, assigning severity levels to ensure the right response," said Steinar Bjørnstad, Research Manager at Tampnet. "By combining DAS and SoP, we're actively securing the physical layer through monitoring, enabling a more holistic security approach."

Tampnet has an extensive fibre network covering more than 5.400 km, in addition to 600.000 km2 of mobile 4G/5G coverage and satellite solutions, which enables digitalisation at 450 offshore installations and vessels globally.

Anders Tysdal, CTO Infrastructure at Tampnet, added: "We started working on this 3-4 years ago, gradually covering more of our infrastructure. Our goal is the implementation of fibre sensing across key segments of our network, and this continues to be a major step towards redefining physical security standards in subsea communications. We are ready to onboard early moving customers."

With this expansion, Tampnet reinforces its position as an industry leader in operational safety and innovation, adding physical security as an integral part of network protection.
